TV Wall Makeover

Our TV wall makeover has been something we wanted to accomplish for the last few years. I finally put together a plan for us to add some storage and open shelves.

We decided to hack 2 Ikea Besta units to make them built in, DIY floating shelves, and mount the TV. Here is where we started.

We marked out the length of the new cabinetry and shelves with blue tape to visualize the size we wanted.

We started hacking the Besta cabinets by adding a 5” base to lift it up off the floor the same height as our baseboards.

We then built the rest of the cabinets and added our baseboards to make it look more built in.

Our next step was mounting the TV.

Making our floating shelves was definitely the biggest part of this project. We used Douglas Fir that was 2” thick x 5’ long x 10” deep.

I wanted the wood color to be a little more neutral. Once we sanded it down there was a little too much red for my liking. I decided to bleach the wood to try to remove some of the red. I applied two layers of regular bleach with a paint brush letting it dry in between coats. After it got to my desired lightness I mixed 3 parts water 1 part white vinegar and wiped it on the shelves to stop the bleaching process.

Once the water and vinegar mixture was dry I used 200 grit sandpaper to smooth out the finish. The bleach made the wood a little rough again. After the sanding was done I applied 1 coat of clear Polyurethane.

Once the shelves were complete it was time to style them up. My husband and I have slowly collected classic books over the last few years. This was a perfect spot to showcase them.
