Shelf Styling Tips + Tricks
Shelf styling is one of my favorite parts of pulling together a space. It’s all about balancing texture and personality. One of the best parts of styling is being able to change it up over time as you collect more items. I never suggest buying everything brand new. It’s fun to hunt for the perfect mix of old and new.
In my office I like the mix of color from the books and magazines so I chose to keep my objects mostly neutral. Mixing metals, wood, and natural pieces create more interest.
Step 1: Place your books. Mix up the orientation and shelf location. I like to keep color families together as much as possible.
Step 2: Start placing your bookends and larger objects.
Step 3: Place any artwork you want displayed. I always like layering in art or photos for a little extra personality.
Step 4: Start grouping your smaller objects. I typically like groupings of 3, but like I did in my office I made a few exceptions. When one object is large I will sometimes just add one smaller object to the grouping.
Stack smaller objects on a stack on books for a little more height.
For mantle styling I use the same concept. I like mixing materials and adding height.
In the kitchen I went with neutral styling. The only real pops of color come from the fruit and flowers. I still like to incorporate a few books, in the case cookbooks, to add an extra layer. I place the most used items on the lower shelf. My top shelf gets the more decorative items or pieces I don’t use as often.
I pulled together some of my favorite accessories and books I love to style spaces with for you to shop.
